Resource Summary: This issue of Healing Hands aims to unravel some of the difficulties at the core of the conversation about involuntary commitment. We will first look at the landscape of mental illness and homelessness in the United States, then some of the key issues and quandaries involved in involuntary commitment. We’ll discuss some interpersonal practices and communication strategies that clinicians can incorporate to lessen the trauma involved in involuntary commitment, and look at some considerations for structural and systemic change.
